Ethernet has largely become well-established in the industrial environment.

However, there are still many applications that cannot be implemented with Ethernet, such as mobile systems or spatially separated stations in large machine halls or in the open field.

In these cases Wireless LAN technology (or WLAN for short) is ideal as a replacement for Ethernet since the TCP/IP protocol used enables the transparent transition from Ethernet to Wireless LAN Ethernet without having to convert the protocols. The latest encryption and authentication protocols offer at the same time satisfactory protection against unauthorised access. Depending on the environment, Wireless LAN can be used to cover distances between 50 and 300 metres and even more by using special antennas.

The new WL01 Wireless LAN module provides the IPC@CHIP^® Controller SC123/SC143 and SC23 with a fully-fledged Wireless LAN interface and enables both

Infrastructure-Mode on an existing access point as well as Adhoc-Mode between several WL01 modules.

An FK61-WL01 Development Kit will be offered for users to develop their own Wireless LAN solutions inexpensively and quickly. It extends an existing development kit DK61 or DK55 with all necessary components for Wireless LAN development.

Bluetooth standard is ideal as a wireless operating and service interface.

Whilst Wireless LAN is ideally suited for wireless data exchange between the individual mobile devices and higher-level control systems, the Bluetooth standard is ideal as a wireless operating and service interface for IP65 or IP67 protected devices or devices where access is difficult during operation.
Nowadays, many laptops, PDAs and mobile phones already come with a Bluetooth interface as a standard feature so that only an operating software is required for turning them into versatile service devices.
The Bluetooth solution for the IPC@CHIP^® is based on an external module that is linked via COM.
The function kit for DK61 and DK55 with all the drivers required to make application development fast and easy will be available as a series product in 2008.
